A laptop can use external GPUs via thunderbolt connections, providing an easy way to utilize more graphical power as well as docking solutions.

Most Thunderbolt 3.0 EGPU cases can be easily set-up. See egpu.io for a comprehensive guide.

Setting up EGPU under Linux

Most system can be correctly setup with appropriate Xorg configuration. Right now, solutions like egpu-switcher switches the X11 configuration based on whether an EGPU is present in the system. As usually EGPU is only detected after the system is booted, the graphical interface can only be activated after the EGPU is connected. This can be achieved by adding dependencies to systemd, let display managers start after bolt and the switcher service. The switcher service might also need a few seconds after bolt is loaded.

Hot swapping needs more experiments.
